What to look for

The equestrian statue of José I, the riverside steps at Cais das Colunas, and the arch leading into Rua Augusta.

The story behind the place

Known locally as Terreiro do Paço, the square occupies the site of the royal palace destroyed in the 1755 earthquake. The rebuilt space gives Lisbon a monumental entrance from the water. Its scale makes more sense if you imagine arriving by ship rather than by tram.
