Route map Listen below or read along

Our tour begins at the iconic Roman Temple of Évora, also known as the Temple of Diana—though its association with the goddess Diana is a romanticized legend. This 2,000-year-old monument is one of the best-preserved Roman ruins in the Iberian Peninsula and serves as a symbol of Évora’s ancient Roman heritage. The temple was built in the 1st century AD, likely dedicated to the Emperor Augustus, who was deified after his death.

The Roman Temple stands on Évora’s highest hill, where the Roman forum was once located, overlooking the city. It originally featured Corinthian columns made of granite with bases and capitals carved from marble. While much of the temple has been lost over the centuries, 14 columns and their capitals remain intact, standing as a testament to the grandeur of Roman architecture.

The temple has survived various phases of destruction and transformation. In the Middle Ages, it was incorporated into the walls of a castle and used as a butcher’s shop, which helped preserve the structure. In the 19th century, efforts were made to restore the temple to its current form, and today it is one of Évora’s most important landmarks.

The Roman Temple of Évora reflects the city’s origins as a Roman colony and its importance within the Roman Empire. It stands as a symbol of the cultural and architectural achievements of Roman Hispania, offering a glimpse into the ancient world.

The Roman Temple is a great spot to start your exploration of Évora. Its location near other important landmarks makes it easy to continue your journey through the city’s historical layers. Take a moment to walk around the temple and imagine what the surrounding area would have looked like in Roman times.
