Next, we head to one of Évora’s most famous and macabre sites: the Capela dos Ossos, or Chapel of Bones. Located within the Igreja de São Francisco, the chapel was built in the 16th century by a Franciscan monk with the aim of encouraging reflection on the transience of life. The walls and pillars of the chapel are entirely covered with human bones and skulls, which are said to belong to around 5,000 people. The bones were exhumed from Évora’s cemeteries during the 16th century, as space was needed for new burials.

The entrance to the chapel bears an inscription in Portuguese that reads: “Nós ossos que aqui estamos pelos vossos esperamos” (We bones that are here, for yours we wait), reminding visitors of their mortality. The chapel is small but visually striking, with every surface covered in carefully arranged bones and skulls. It is both eerie and fascinating, providing a stark contrast to the more serene and decorative churches found elsewhere in Évora.

The Chapel of Bones was not built simply as a morbid display but rather as a reflection on the fragility of human life and the inevitability of death. This theme was common in Catholicism during the Counter-Reformation, a time when the church sought to remind people of the fleeting nature of earthly existence and the importance of preparing for the afterlife.

The Chapel of Bones reflects the 16th-century Catholic tradition of contemplating mortality and the transience of life. It serves as a reminder of the Counter-Reformation’s emphasis on spiritual reflection, making it a significant religious site in Évora’s history.

While the Chapel of Bones can be unsettling, it is one of Évora’s most unique and thought-provoking sites. Be sure to take your time exploring the chapel and reflecting on its message. Nearby, you’ll find the Igreja de São Francisco, a beautiful Gothic church that is also worth a visit.
