Route map Listen below or read along

Our tour begins at the Arco da Vila, one of the main entrances to Faro’s Old Town, also known as the Cidade Velha. This impressive archway was built in the early 19th century during the reign of King João VI, though it incorporates elements of the city’s earlier Moorish walls. The Arco da Vila is a neoclassical masterpiece designed by the Italian architect Francesco Xavier Fabri, and its elegant façade, with its stonework and balustrade, offers a grand welcome into the old part of the city.

As you pass through the arch, you’ll notice a small niche above the gate that houses a statue of Saint Thomas Aquinas, the patron saint of Faro. The arch leads into the narrow, cobbled streets of the Cidade Velha, where time seems to have stood still. The area is filled with whitewashed buildings, ancient stone walls, and traditional tiled roofs, making it the perfect place to begin our journey into Faro’s past.

Just outside the Arco da Vila, you’ll also find Faro’s picturesque Marina, where colorful boats bob in the water and locals stroll along the waterfront. The marina offers stunning views of the Ria Formosa lagoon and is a great spot to pause and take in the beauty of the coastline.

The Arco da Vila is a symbol of Faro’s resilience and its long history of fortifications. It was built to replace the earlier Moorish gate, which was part of the city’s defensive walls, and it stands as a reminder of Faro’s strategic importance as a port city.

Take a moment to enjoy the views of the Ria Formosa from the marina before heading into the Old Town. The area is filled with cafés where you can grab a coffee or a snack before starting your exploration.
