Sé de Faro (Faro Cathedral)

Route map Listen below or read along

From the Arco da Vila, we make our way to the heart of the Cidade Velha and one of Faro’s most important historical landmarks: the Sé de Faro, or Faro Cathedral. The cathedral sits on Largo da Sé, a tranquil square surrounded by orange trees and stately buildings. The Sé de Faro was originally built in the 13th century on the site of a former Moorish mosque, which itself had been built over a Roman temple—a testament to the city’s long and layered history.

The exterior of the Sé de Faro is a mix of architectural styles, reflecting the many changes it has undergone over the centuries. The original structure was heavily damaged during the 1755 earthquake, and much of what you see today dates from the 18th century. The cathedral’s bell tower is one of its most striking features, offering panoramic views of the Ria Formosa and the city below if you’re willing to climb its narrow steps.

Inside, the cathedral is a masterpiece of Baroque and Renaissance art. The high altar, with its gilded wood carvings and religious statues, is particularly impressive. The choir stalls, carved from dark wood, are intricately detailed, and the walls are adorned with azulejos (Portuguese ceramic tiles) that depict scenes from the Bible. One of the most notable features of the cathedral is the Chapel of Santo Lenho, where relics of the True Cross are kept.

The Sé de Faro is a symbol of Faro’s religious importance and its role as the seat of the Bishop of the Algarve. The cathedral’s layers of history, from its Roman roots to its Moorish past and its Christian transformation, reflect the city’s diverse cultural heritage.

Climb the bell tower for one of the best views in Faro. The interior of the cathedral is also worth exploring, especially for its stunning Baroque altarpieces and azulejo panels.
