Just across the square from the Sé de Faro, you’ll find the elegant Palácio Episcopal, or Episcopal Palace, the residence of the Bishop of Faro. This stately palace was built in the 18th century and is one of the most important examples of Baroque architecture in the Algarve. The palace’s façade is relatively simple, but its grand interiors, with their ornate rooms and religious art, reflect the power and prestige of the church in Faro.

The Palácio Episcopal has played an important role in the religious and political life of the Algarve for centuries. Inside, you’ll find beautiful azulejo panels, intricate stucco ceilings, and rooms filled with religious art and furniture from the 18th century. Though the palace is not always open to the public, it is often accessible during special events and guided tours.

The palace is also surrounded by beautiful gardens, which offer a peaceful retreat from the hustle and bustle of the city. The Palácio Episcopal is part of the rich ecclesiastical history of Faro, and its grand halls and chambers provide a glimpse into the lives of the city’s bishops.

The Palácio Episcopal reflects the power and wealth of the Catholic Church in the Algarve during the 18th century. It serves as a reminder of the important role Faro has played as a religious center for centuries.

If you have the opportunity to visit the Palácio Episcopal during a special event or guided tour, it’s well worth exploring the elegant rooms and gardens. Even if the palace is not open, it’s worth admiring the building’s Baroque façade from the square.
