From the museum, we’ll continue along the coast to one of Cascais’ most dramatic natural landmarks, the Boca do Inferno (Hell’s Mouth). This rugged cliff formation is famous for its striking rock arch and the powerful waves that crash against the cliffs, creating a dramatic spectacle, especially during stormy weather.

The name Boca do Inferno comes from the roaring sound of the waves, which, when crashing against the cliffs, resemble the furious mouth of a beast. This natural feature has been carved over millennia by the relentless force of the sea, and today, it’s one of Cascais’ most popular attractions for its breathtaking views of the Atlantic Ocean and the wild beauty of the coastline.

Historically, Boca do Inferno has always attracted attention. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, it was a favorite spot for aristocrats and tourists who were drawn to its raw power and beauty. It even became the subject of folklore and local legends, with some stories claiming it was a portal to the underworld.

Boca do Inferno is also significant because it represents the powerful natural forces that have shaped Cascais and the Portuguese coastline for centuries. This rugged, windswept beauty is one of the reasons why Cascais has long been a retreat for nature lovers, artists, and adventurers.

If you’re visiting during lunchtime, Boca do Inferno is close to some excellent seafood restaurants. One option is Mar do Inferno, a family-run restaurant known for its fresh seafood and incredible ocean views. Enjoy a plate of grilled fish or ameijoas à bulhão pato, clams in garlic sauce, while listening to the crashing waves.
