Route map Listen below or read along

From the Palais de l'Isle, we head uphill to the Château d'Annecy, a majestic castle that overlooks the old town. The Château d'Annecy was built between the 12th and 16th centuries and served as the residence of the Counts of Geneva and later the Dukes of Savoy. The castle’s architecture reflects the changing styles of the medieval and Renaissance periods, with its fortified walls, watchtowers, and elegant residential buildings.

Today, the Château d'Annecy is home to the Musée-Château, a museum that showcases the history, art, and culture of the Haute-Savoie region. The museum’s exhibits include everything from medieval sculptures and paintings to contemporary art and photography. One of the highlights of the museum is its collection of alpine furniture, which offers a fascinating look at traditional life in the French Alps.

From the castle’s ramparts, you’ll be treated to stunning views of Annecy, Lac d'Annecy, and the surrounding mountains. The panoramic view from the top is one of the best in town, offering a perfect vantage point to admire the beauty of the region.

The Château d'Annecy played a central role in the political and military history of the region. Its transformation into a museum has preserved its architectural beauty and provides a deeper understanding of the town’s past.

Be sure to visit the museum inside the castle to learn about Annecy’s history and enjoy the rotating art exhibitions. The view from the castle’s terrace is breathtaking, so bring your camera for some memorable photos of the town and lake.
