Rue des Forges

Route map Listen below or read along

From Église Notre-Dame, we continue our tour along Rue des Forges, one of the most picturesque streets in Dijon. This pedestrian street is lined with beautifully preserved Renaissance mansions, many of which date back to the 15th and 16th centuries. The street is named after the blacksmiths (forgers) who once worked here, but today it is home to upscale boutiques, cafés, and restaurants.

As you walk down Rue des Forges, you’ll notice several impressive townhouses, including the Maison Maillard, a 16th-century mansion with a richly decorated facade. Further along the street is the Hôtel Chambellan, a beautiful example of Burgundian Renaissance architecture with its ornate stonework, spiral staircase, and inner courtyard.

The street’s blend of Gothic and Renaissance architecture, along with its lively atmosphere, makes it a perfect place for a leisurely stroll. The Owl Trail passes through this street, guiding visitors to several key historic sites along the way.

Rue des Forges reflects Dijon’s prosperity during the Renaissance, when wealthy merchants and noble families built grand townhouses in the city. The street’s architecture is a testament to the city’s artistic and cultural achievements during this period.

Take your time exploring the hidden courtyards and architectural details along Rue des Forges. Stop at one of the cafés for a pastry or a coffee and enjoy the charming atmosphere of this historic street.
